![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I also just couldn’t get enough of the claustrophobic setting - no electricity? No WiFi? No way out? It all culminates in the ultimate work trip nightmare that, despite a few unrealistic moments, knocked me out. I especially loved the voice of Erin (one of the main characters) and was super into Ware’s wintery imagery. It’s a tightly wound, Agatha Christie-esque set-up, and unlike in my review for His & Hers, I didn’t feel like the twists were cheap. Cutting off a group of tech entrepreneurs in their chalet just as an avalanche hits, the unputdownable One By One mines envy, avarice and other dark motives in. When an avalanche leaves them stranded, victims start piling up and accusations fly. Luckily I really enjoyed One by One, and it’s inspired me to take up skiing (lol jk never).Īs usual Ware twists a compelling mystery involving a group of people - in this case the execs at a tech company on their Alps retreat - with tensions running high (literally, since they’re on the top of a mountain for most of the book). I’ve been a fan of Ruth Ware for a while now - In a Dark, Dark Wood is one of my favorite thrillers, ever - but her last few books haven’t really been my jam, to be quite honest. There are no outlandish scenarios or truly out-of-the-ordinary circumstances that render the plot unbelievable. □ □□□□□ □□□□□ □□□□□□ □□.” As always, Ware is effective at not just manipulating her characters, but also their environment, with a simplicity that belies its effectiveness. ![]()

![]() ![]() Lana thinks a summer road trip sounds like fun, but the backseat is a crowded place for two tween girls with two huge secrets to hide, and this bumpy road to friendship is full of unexpected twists and turns. They didn’t exactly hit it off-in fact, depending on who you ask, that first meeting was either an embarrassment or a disaster-but they’re about to spend an entire week together, just the two of them and their honeymooning grandparents, road-tripping in Cassie’s grandmother’s Subaru. Lana and Cassie have met only once before, at the wedding of Lana’s Grandpa Howe and Cassie’s Grandma Tess two months ago. This story would be an excellent faith and family read aloud or faith and family discussion facilitator. It deals with so much and yet it is not preachy or pushy. ![]() ![]() Drive Me Crazy by Terra Élan McVoy is a sensational book with a great message that both parents and tweens/middle graders will adore. With every opening move for X it's going to be a draw if you move optimally from that point onward. MH: How come you didn't start with X in the middle? There was no way I was doing the rest of it by hand! ![]() It took me something like 12 hours to draw out the fifth of it that I did. I think I drew maybe a fifth or a sixth of the actual chart by hand, and then put that in the computer and mirrored and flipped it, and pieced together the rest of it. Randall Munroe: I remember that-I have a callus in my hand from making it. The only winning move is to play, perfectly, waiting for your opponent to make a mistake. ![]() ![]() ![]() One of the most appealing things about the narrative, which might be attributed to her scrupulously objective mind, is how self-aware and discerning our protagonist is about her various foibles. However, as most introspective narratives go, this style runs the risk of being discursive. broaches the divide between neuroscience and psychology with shrewd clear sightedness. sensitively tackles the subject of how mental illness and therapy in particular is still frowned upon and very much a taboo subject among ethnic communities. The only weakness of Transcendent Kingdom comes at its rather too-tidy conclusion, but this is a slight quibble in a novel that insightfully explores many pressing issues of our time, and in marrying science with faith, explores the limits and possibilities of both. Gifty’s relationship with her mother is also unusual and deeply affecting. Just as Gyasi unflinchingly spotlights the failures of evangelicalism, she casts an equally critical eye on the knee-jerk scorn with which atheists can sometimes treat religion. Gyasi’s portrayal of Gifty's spiritual journey is refreshing in that a negative experience with her church does not cause her to reject Christianity altogether, though she wrestles mightily with her faith. ![]() While these themes may not make for the lightest read, there is hope in Gifty’s journey and a call for empathy. ![]() Gyasi excels at showing the interwoven nature of these evils and the stress they place on Black lives. ![]() ![]() ![]() Holmes and Watson must work through a list of suspects which includes Colonel James Moriarty, brother to the late Professor Moriarty - but will they find the culprit before tragedy strikes? I did like Gervase, I just wish he had been developed more. He didn't always seem that interested in even forwarding her 'education' at times. There wasn't much real connection between the hero and heroine, at least in my opinion. Don't get me wrong, I don't mind tropes, but this book seemed to throw them all in without following through to a logical conclusion or giving good backstory to explain whatever was going on. You had the dark 'alpha' Duke, the plain bluestocking virgin, a spy caper, the evil gambling stepfather, the first wife who betrayed the Duke, and several other tropes one can find in a Regency romance. Pearce's work, this one was kind of a mess. She ends up in his household working at decoding cryptic notes detailing an assassination attempt as well as to receive lessons in becoming a courtesan so that she can earn money to support her invalid brother.
