I struggle to find depth in the characters or the plot, and am rather bored by both. Overall, Titus Groan is a book that gives you no way to engage with it except in the most literal terms. The fact that the book has a third person omniscient narrator doesn’t help, since it positions the narrative as objective and impartial, thereby leaving you little interpretive license for what’s going on. ![]() ![]() This gives an effect of such profound narrative ambivalence that you wonder why you’re being told any of this in the first place, and your only impetus to keep caring is your knowledge that you and Titus Groan are in a social contract where it is obliged to be telling you a story. Both the crucial and the trivial are expounded with such excruciating verbosity (more on this below) that one wonders if any of it is important. Each character’s actions are driven by one defining motive or character trait while these interact in often quite clever ways, they don’t particularly inspire reflection or even investment. For all its twisted and fantastical nature, I find it a somehow superficial and lacklustre story. The stories of these diverse individuals unfold and interweave over the course of the book, proceeding chronologically from the day of Titus’ birth. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 'What are you doing here?' In "The Imp of the Perverse," the narrator contends, "he intellectual or logical man, rather than the understanding or observant man, set himself to imagine designs - to dictate the purposes to God" (Poe 280). "The Imp of the Perverse" appears to be at first an essay written by Poe that seeks to explain impulsive behavior, however, it is soon revealed the story is told from an unnamed narrator's perspective. It was important for Poe to define the imp of the perverse in the essay part of the short story, as this concept became a prominent theme in subsequent stories. In "The Imp of the Perverse," Poe introduces the concept of phrenology, a science that seeks to establish and define the relationship between an individual's character and the skull's morphology and how phrenology has failed to explain impulsive behavior ("The History of Morphology"). Through these stories, Poe explores the impact a mental illness has on the narrator's and how each of the narrators attempts to justify their behavior. ![]() In Poe's "Imp of the Perverse," "The Tell-Tale Heart," and "The Black Cat," the respective narrators of these stories attempt to give a logical explanation for the manner in which they conducted themselves. Jenny Agutter was the perfect choice to bring this story to life. I particularly liked the way the war changed the tone of the story, making the violence both more likely and more acceptable. The plot is grimly satisfying, nodding to tradition before tossing it aside for something that is more muscular and aggressive, in a very English way. The emotions are intensified by being muted in their expression. The young widow from whose point of view the story is told is perceptive and strong-minded. The prose is as sharp-edged and precise as a scalpel. It is something entirely darker and more realistic. ![]() This is not a cosy mystery with a smart detective solving clever puzzles about who committed a largely bloodless crime. The collection opens with the title story, “The Mistletoe Murder”, which tells the story of a murder at a country house at Christmas during World War Two. The second two stories, read by Daniel Weyman are light vignettes showing Adam Dalgliesh at work. The first two stories, both read by Jenny Agutter, are strong, memorable standalone pieces.
